ABOUT THIS EVENT
Norman Erikson Pasaribu has received rapturous praise for his poetry and prose, much of which explores the experiences of queer communities in Indonesia, where he is based. His short fiction collection Happy Stories, Mostly has been shortlisted for the 2022 Republic of Consciousness Prize, was longlisted for the International Booker Prize, and is widely adored among our Charing Cross Road booksellers. As such, it is with great joy that we will be hosting him for a discussion of this magnificently versatile work.
Translated from the Indonesian by Tiffany Tsao, this collection of stories, by turns hilarious and devastating, places queer characters in situations and plots conventionally filled by hetero protagonists. There is an addicting quality to Pasaribu’s writing, which leaps and bounds with the joy of creation, belying the sometimes devastating truths under the surface.
A chairperson for this event will be announced shortly. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and a book signing. Doors will open from 6:30pm.
Supported by English PEN and the Metal Southend International Writers’ Residency Programme
